The town of Pliska is situated in the south end of the Loudogorie Plateau. It is 24 km north-east of Shumen, 6 km north-west of Kaspichan, 6 km west of Novi Pazar, and 2 km south of the remains of the first Bulgarian capital of the same name. The oldest source of information about Pliska is the inscription on the stone columns of 821(Khan Omurtag’s) in the vicinity of the village of the Chatalar(at present Tsar Kolum railway station). Under the Turkish rule the name of the settlement was changed to Aboba, which was preserved till 1925. After that it was called Pliskov, and in 1947 – Pliska.
